I-Zone Tutorial - Defensible Space
Minimize

Defensible Space – Zone 1: Extends 30’ from all buildings, structures, decks, etc.

  • Use non-combustible fencing or use 10’ of metal or composite fencing to connect wood fencing to the exterior of the structures.
  • Remove all dead or dying vegetation.
  • Trim tree canopies regularly to keep their branches a minimum of 10 feet from structures and other trees.
  • Remove leaf litter (dry leaves, pine needles, etc.) from yard, roof and rain gutters.
  • Relocate wood piles and other combustible materials to zone 2.
  • Remove vegetation from around and under decking.
  • Remove or prune vegetation from around windows.
  • Remove “ladder fuels” (low level vegetation and branches that allow fire to spread from the ground to the tree canopy)

Defensible Space – Zone 2: Extends from zone 1 to 100’ from buildings, structures and decks. Reduce the continuity of fuels by removing dead material and thinning vegetation. Minimum spacing between plants should be 3 times the dimension of the plant.

  • Remove “ladder fuels”
  • Cut or mow annual grass to a maximum height of 4”
  • Trim trees annually to keep their branches a minimum of 10’ from other trees.

If you live in a neighborhood against grassland or forests, make sure that a 30’-50’ community fire break is maintained.
